About MatScan
The interactive 3D visualizer is a Z-buffer-based renderer created for demonstration purposes. Its primary goal is to showcase the basic physical behavior of digitally scanned materials in real-time. To ensure optimal performance in a web environment, the visualizer utilizes a reduced resolution and a streamlined feature set compared to the full standard. It relies on a custom, modified PNG file format specifically optimized for fast data transfer over the internet.
The system automatically scales materials to the 3D objects, while still allowing for precise manual adjustments. The lighting setup offers flexibility with a choice of key point light sources—sun, cold flash, or an omni lamp—combined with an HDRI environment for realistic reflections. Secondary lighting is simulated highly efficiently using precalculated probability data baked directly into the geometry of the objects themselves.
While the visualizer provides an excellent initial impression of the surfaces, the uncompromised photorealistic quality and the full potential of the scanned materials are completely unlocked through V-Ray, the original VRscans technology, and other products by Chaos that utilize this technology.
